Assignment 3 – first attempt

My first assignment piece was developed from preliminary studies highlighted in my last post. Whilst compiling my reflection with a view to finishing this part, I realised I was not entirely happy with the final drawing. It is too formal in that I have tried to represent everything I saw to make sure the viewer gets the full impression of the place. This was despite having in my mind the whole time, what can I leave out. This obviously went by the by and I risked overworking it to try and make it look realistic and acceptable as a landscape. I questioned whether I needed to simplify my choices more, but maybe it was just a case of simplifying my techniques more, and relaxing my marks (i.e. not overworking them). This drawing took much longer than 2 hours and this was the criterion that made me realise simplification was needed.

I still see things in the piece that need changing and I feel I want to start again to see what I could achieve in around 2 hours. At this point I took a break and went back to tidy up my sketchbook and log, and in turn completed some John Virtue research. He was my turning point and new inspiration. He gave me the simplicity I was visualising, especially in his 1975 drawing of Green Haworth from South, pencil and ink – see next post.
